Thermodynamics of Few-Particle Systems

چکیده
We consider the wide class of few-particle systems that have some analog of the thermodynamic laws. These systems are characterized by the distributions that are determined by the Hamiltonian and satisfy the Liouville equation. Few-particle systems of this class are described by a non-holonomic constraint: the power of non-potential forces is directly proportional to the velocity of the elementary phase volume change. The coefficient of this proportionality is determined by the Hamiltonian. In the general case, the examples of the few-particle systems of this class are the constant temperature systems, canonicaldissipative systems, and Fermi-Bose classical systems.

Exact few-body results for strongly correlated quantum gases in two dimensions
The study of strongly correlated quantum gases in two dimensions has important ramifications for understanding many intriguing phenomena in solid materials, such as high-Tc superconductivity and the fractional quantum-Hall effect. However, theoretical methods are plagued by the existence of significant quantum fluctuations. Here, we present twoand three-body exact solutions for both fermions an...
متن کاملA ug 1 99 6 Study of composite fermions : Beyond few particle systems
We construct a new representation of composite fermion wave functions in the lowest Landau level which enables Monte Carlo computations at arbitrary filling factors for a fairly large number of composite fermions, thus clearing the way toward a more detailed quantitative investigation of the fractional quantum Hall effect. As an illustrative application, thermodynamic estimates for the transpor...
متن کاملGibbs Entropy and Irreversible Thermodynamics
Recently a number of approaches has been developed to connect the microscopic dynamics of particle systems to the macroscopic properties of systems in nonequilibrium stationary states, via the theory of dynamical systems. This way a direct connection between dynamics and Irreversible Thermodynamics has been claimed to have been found. However, the main quantity used in these studies is a (coars...
متن کاملStatistical mechanics and thermodynamics of large and small systems
Thermodynamics makes definite predictions about the thermal behavior of macroscopic systems in and out of equilibrium. For example, it provides relations between various measurable quantities such as the specific heat or compressibility of equilibrium systems, and the direction of energy flow in systems with non-uniform temperatures. Statistical mechanics aims to derive this behavior from the d...

We analyze some models of nonequilibrium systems proposed in the past decade which derive the laws of Irreversible Thermodynamics from deterministic dynamics. We find that these models do not posses the crucial property of local thermodynamic equilibrium, since they represent noninteracting particles systems. Hence, these models are not suited for a derivation of Irreversible Thermodynamics. In...
